Structure and Function of the Human Body, and Principles of First Aid

To provide first aid effectively, a teacher needs a basic understanding of the human body. The skeletal and muscular systems give the body its shape and allow for movement. The circulatory system, powered by the heart, pumps blood to deliver oxygen and nutrients throughout the body. The respiratory system, primarily the lungs, brings in this vital oxygen. Knowing this helps you understand why severe bleeding or blocked airways are immediate life-threatening emergencies.

First aid is the initial, temporary help given to an injured or sick person before professional medical care arrives. It is guided by three core principles:

  1. Preserve life: Check for safety, ensure the person is breathing, and stop severe bleeding.
  2. Prevent worsening: Keep the injury stable and protect the person from further harm.
  3. Promote recovery: Reassure the person, provide comfort, and arrange for medical help.

Example

A student falls and hits their head, lying perfectly still. Instead of panicking, the teacher recalls the principle to "preserve life" and immediately checks if the child's chest is rising and falling to confirm they are breathing before calling for the school nurse.

First Aid Equipment

A well-stocked first aid kit is essential for any school environment. Basic equipment should be stored in a clean, easily accessible container. Essential items include:

  • Disposable gloves: To protect both the responder and the patient from infection.
  • Sterile gauze pads: To cover cuts and absorb blood.
  • Triangular bandages: Large cloth triangles used to create arm slings.
  • Roller bandages: To secure gauze pads in place or provide support to injured joints.
  • Adhesive plasters (Band-Aids): For minor scrapes and small cuts.
  • Antiseptic wipes or liquid: To clean minor wounds and prevent infection.
  • Blunt-ended scissors: For safely cutting tape, bandages, or clothing without piercing the skin.

Example

A child scrapes their knee on the playground asphalt. The teacher puts on disposable gloves, cleans the dirt from the scrape with an antiseptic wipe, and covers it with an adhesive plaster from the yard kit.

Fractures: Causes, Symptoms and First Aid

A fracture is a broken or cracked bone. Causes: Fractures are usually caused by physical impact, heavy falls, or severe twisting motions. Symptoms: The primary signs of a fracture include intense pain, rapid swelling, bruising, loss of function, and sometimes a visible deformity (the limb looks bent at an unnatural angle). First Aid: The goal is to keep the injured area completely still. Never attempt to push a bone back into place or realign the limb. Immobilize the injured body part using soft padding, splints, and bandages, making sure to secure the joints both above and below the fracture. An ambulance or doctor must be called immediately for proper medical treatment.

Example

A student falls off the monkey bars and their forearm looks visibly distorted. The teacher instructs the student not to move, uses a folded sweater to support the arm, and sends another student to call emergency services.

Why this matters for a teacher: Mishandling a suspected broken bone can cause severe internal damage to nerves and blood vessels, so a teacher must know how to keep the injury stable until professionals arrive.

Muscular Sprains: Causes, Symptoms and Remedies

A sprain occurs when a ligament (the tough tissue holding joints together) is overstretched or torn. Causes: Sprains are generally caused by a sudden, violent twisting of a joint, most commonly affecting the ankles, knees, or wrists. Symptoms: Signs include localized pain, swelling, bruising, and a restricted ability to move the joint or bear weight. Remedies (First Aid): The standard initial remedy is the R.I.C.E. method.

  • Rest: Stop the physical activity immediately to prevent further damage.
  • Ice: Apply an ice pack wrapped in a cloth (never directly on the skin) for 15-20 minutes to reduce swelling.
  • Compression: Wrap the joint with a firm, elastic bandage to provide support, ensuring it is not so tight that it cuts off circulation.
  • Elevation: Raise the injured limb above the level of the heart, if possible, to help fluid drain away and minimize swelling. Always consult a doctor for a professional evaluation to ensure the injury is not a fracture.

A student twists their ankle during a basketball match. The teacher has them sit down (Rest), applies a cold pack (Ice), wraps the ankle with a roller bandage (Compression), and props the foot on a chair (Elevation).

Why this matters for a teacher: Quick application of the R.I.C.E. method significantly reduces swelling and pain, protecting the joint and speeding up the student's eventual recovery.

First Aid for Haemorrhage and Respiratory Discomfort

Haemorrhage (Bleeding): Severe bleeding can lead to a dangerous drop in blood volume. First Aid: Put on disposable gloves. Apply firm, direct pressure to the wound using a clean cloth or sterile gauze. If an arm or leg is bleeding, raise it above the level of the heart to slow the blood flow. Call emergency medical services immediately if the bleeding is heavy or does not stop.

Respiratory Discomfort: Difficulty breathing can be caused by asthma attacks, allergic reactions, or choking. First Aid: If a person is struggling to breathe, sit them in a comfortable, upright position, which makes lung expansion easier. Loosen any tight clothing around their neck and chest. If they have prescribed medication (such as an asthma inhaler), help them locate and use it. Reassure them gently, as panic worsens breathing. Call an ambulance immediately if their breathing does not improve quickly.

A student with known asthma starts wheezing heavily and clutching their chest after running track. The teacher sits them down on a bench, helps them take two puffs from their prescribed inhaler, and stays calm to keep the student relaxed.

Carrying a Sick or Wounded Person

You should never move an injured person unless they are in immediate, life-threatening danger (such as a fire). If moving them is absolutely necessary, specific methods must be used to avoid causing further injury. Natural Methods (No Equipment):

  • Human Crutch: The injured person puts their arm around the rescuer's neck while the rescuer supports their waist, helping them hop on their good leg.
  • Cradle Carry: Lifting a small child directly in your arms.
  • Two-Handed or Four-Handed Seat: Two rescuers lock their hands together to create a secure "chair" for the conscious patient to sit on while putting their arms around the rescuers' necks. Artificial Methods (Using Equipment): Moving a person using external items, such as a canvas stretcher, rolling them in a wheelchair, or placing them on a sturdy blanket and dragging them safely across the floor.

Example

A fire alarm sounds, but a student has severely sprained their ankle and cannot walk. Two teachers quickly lock their arms together to form a four-handed seat and carry the student out of the building safely.

Why this matters for a teacher: Knowing how to move a student safely ensures that neither the injured child nor the rescuing teacher gets further hurt during an emergency evacuation.

Treatment of Unconsciousness

Unconsciousness is a state where a person is entirely unresponsive to sounds, shaking, or pain. It can be caused by fainting, head injuries, low blood sugar, or cardiac arrest. First Aid: First, check the area for danger. Next, check for a response by loudly asking if they are okay and gently shaking their shoulders. If there is no response, check their breathing by looking at their chest, listening for breath sounds, and feeling for air on your cheek for up to 10 seconds.

  • If they are breathing normally: Place them in the recovery position. Roll them onto their side, tilt their head back slightly to keep the airway open, and bend their top knee at a right angle to prop them up. This prevents their tongue from blocking their throat and allows fluids (like vomit) to drain out.
  • If they are not breathing: Begin CPR (chest compressions) immediately. In all cases of unconsciousness, emergency medical services must be contacted immediately.

Example

A student faints during a hot morning assembly and does not wake up when spoken to. The teacher checks their breathing, finds it normal, and rolls them onto their side (recovery position) to keep their airway clear until paramedics arrive.

Why this matters for a teacher: Unconscious patients lying on their backs are at high risk of suffocating on their own tongue; the recovery position is a simple, critical, life-saving skill.

Treatment of Heat Stroke

Heat stroke is a severe, life-threatening medical emergency where the body's internal temperature regulation completely fails. It is far more dangerous than simple heat exhaustion. Causes and Symptoms: Caused by prolonged exposure to extreme heat and dehydration. Symptoms include dangerously hot, flushed, and dry skin (the person often stops sweating entirely), severe confusion, a rapid pulse, dizziness, and progressing to unconsciousness or seizures. First Aid: Call an ambulance immediately. Move the person to a cool, shaded, or air-conditioned area. Remove unnecessary clothing. Cool the person as rapidly as possible by sponging them with cold water, fanning them vigorously, or applying cold wet towels to their neck, armpits, and groin. Do not force them to drink fluids if they are confused or unconscious, as they could choke.

Example

During a summer field trip, a student becomes highly disoriented, their skin feels burning hot, and they are not sweating. The teacher immediately calls an ambulance, moves the student into an air-conditioned shop, and applies wet cloths to their skin to rapidly lower their temperature.

Why this matters for a teacher: Heat stroke causes brain damage and can be fatal if not treated instantly; a teacher must recognize it and aggressively cool the student down before medical help arrives.

General Local Diseases and Preventive Measures

Schools can be environments where diseases spread easily. Teachers should be aware of broad categories of common, locally prevalent illnesses and how to prevent them:

  • Water-borne diseases: Illnesses like typhoid or cholera are caused by consuming contaminated water or food.
  • Vector-borne diseases: Illnesses like malaria or dengue fever are transmitted by insects, primarily mosquitoes.
  • Airborne and contact diseases: Illnesses like influenza (the flu), tuberculosis, or common colds are spread by coughing, sneezing, and unwashed hands.

Preventive Measures:

  • Hygiene: Enforce strict, regular handwashing with soap and water among students, especially before meals and after using the restroom.
  • Sanitation: Ensure the school has access to clean, safe drinking water and well-maintained sanitary toilets.
  • Vector Control: Eliminate stagnant, standing water around the school premises (in old tires, buckets, or blocked drains) to prevent mosquitoes from breeding.
  • Ventilation and Vaccination: Keep classroom windows open to ensure fresh air circulation, and support community awareness campaigns regarding routine childhood vaccinations.

Example

A teacher notices several empty pots collecting rainwater behind the school cafeteria. They ask the maintenance staff to turn them upside down to stop mosquitoes from breeding and spreading vector-borne diseases.

Why this matters for a teacher: Proactive hygiene and sanitation in the school environment protect the health of the entire community and minimize widespread student absences.
